Estonian President and EU Transport Commissioner to welcome 85 airlines in Tallinn

Routes Europe, now in its 7th year, will see a record number of attendees when the 2012 event opens in Tallinn in four days time. The event will be hosted by Tallinn Airport at the Radisson Blu Hotel Olümpia in Estonia’s historic capital.

Over 175 airline delegates representing 85 of Europe’s leading airlines will be represented at Routes Europe, which will take place from 20-22 May. This amounts to a 35% growth in airline delegate numbers from last year’s event which was held in Cagliari, Italy, making Routes Europe 2012 the largest European route development event ever.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Republic of Estonia will open a Networking Evening, which will include the Routes Airport Marketing Awards, on Monday 21st May at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. Routes Europe 2012 will be largest event ever to take place in Estonia after the Eurovision Song Contest in 2002.

For the first time ever Routes Europe 2012 will open with the Routes Europe Strategy Forum. A keynote address from Mr Siim Kallas, Vice President European Commission, responsible for transport will open the Forum on Sunday, 20 May.

Flag carriers will be strongly represented in Tallinn with six delegates in attendance from Lufthansa and registrations also received from CSA-Czech Airlines, Turkish Airlines, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Estonian Air and Alitalia.

In addition, a significant low cost carrier presence is expected with registrations from Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian, Germanwings, Vueling, Jet2.com, transavia.com and airberlin which will make its inaugural appearance at Routes Europe this year. Also attending the event for the first time is Spanish start-up carrier Volotea.

Regional airlines will also be out in force with confirmed registrations received from SkyWork Airlines, Blue Islands, Flybe, Germania, Darwin Airline, Danube Wings and Skyways Express along with a strong Russian participation including Aeroflot, S7, Rossiya and UT Air.

“We will have a record number of delegates at Routes Europe this year,” said David Stroud, Executive Vice President Airports, Routes for UBM Aviation continuing: “this growth is beyond even our expectations and we are delighted that Routes Europe continues to attract the key decision makers from the region and plays an important role in shaping Europe’s future networks.”

“Estonia’s aviation market is the fastest growing in Europe, and Tallinn Airport is almost there to becoming the cosiest airport in the world,” says Erik Sakkov, Member of the Board for Tallinn Airport continuing: “That’s why we feel there is no better place to host the top event of European aviation industry, and we are incredibly honoured to do just that. As a small country, we know perfectly well, why Estonia and Tallinn are a perfect travel destination, but much of the international travel industry is not aware of it yet. By hosting Routes Europe 2012, let me promise you – we are determined to correct that issue.”

A panel of leading industry experts will take part in a number of moderator led discussions during the Strategy Summit which will address issues affecting aviation and route development across the region. Sessions will cover The Eurozone Crisis, the impacts of regulation and explore whether now is a good time to sell an airport. High level delegates involved in the panel sessions include, amongst many others, Mr Tero Taskila, President & CEO of Estonian Air, Mr Fernado Estrada, Strategy & Alliances Director for Vueling, Mr Kjartan Jonsson, Director Network Planning for Icelandair, Mr Eric Herbane, Head of French Airport Slot Coordination, EUACA, Mr Wojciech Prokopowicz, Investor Relations for Warsaw Modlin Airport and Mr Zafer Mese, Airline Marketing, Business Development & Investments Europe for TAV Airport Holdings.

In addition to the one-to-one meetings taking place at the event, this year’s Route Exchange programme will see five carriers deliver an overview of their route development opportunities and how airports can be part of their airline expansion. The carriers delivering briefings, which are open to all attending airports, are easyJet, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, SkyWork Airlines and Volotea.

9th May 2012

Routes Africa, now in its 7th year, is the annual gathering of air service decision makers for the African region and the 2012 event will take place on 8-10 July hosted by the Seychelles Tourism Board in partnership with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority supported by the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), AFRAA (African Airlines Association) and ACI Africa. The event will take place in the Seychelles capital Victoria and is expected to attract up to 150 delegates.

This will be the first time that the event has been held in the Indian Ocean region and will raise awareness of the need to increase connectivity between Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean region. It will also provide an ideal opportunity for our host to showcase their destination and celebrate the airport’s 40th anniversary.

Routes Africa attracts key decision makers from a wide variety of airlines with a growing presence from charter carriers and airlines based outside of the region wishing to learn more about the existing opportunities. Early registrations have already been received from, amongst others, Arik Air, Etihad Airways, Air Seychelles, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Mega Maldives and South African Airways who are the largest airline in the African region.

The event will open with the Routes Africa Strategy Forum which will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 8th July and the morning of Monday 9th July. Minister of Tourism for the Seychelles, Alain St Ange will open the Forum followed by a keynote address from Mr Cramer Ball, CEO of Air Seychelles. A panel of leading industry experts will then take part in moderator led discussions addressing aviation and route development issues across the region including:

Unlocking the Market – Liberalisation vs. Competition

Safety, Security & Standards

The Road to Recovery – Rebuilding & Looking to the Future

“Air service development to, from and within Africa is vital for the tourism and economic development of the African continent.” Says International Tourism Director for Routes, Ged Brown, explaining: “This is especially true of the many and varied islands off the coast of Africa whose economies rely heavily on sustainable air services. For these reasons, The Seychelles provides the perfect backdrop to this 7th Routes Africa event.”

Ten international carriers from a number of international hubs in Africa, Europe and the Middle East provide connections to Seychelles International Airport (SEZ). Continuous growth over the last few years, consistent with the increase in air services, has resulted in almost 250,000 passengers using the airport in 2011. The airport is also a hub for inter-island travel and provides quick and convenient domestic flights, operated by Air Seychelles, throughout the day to Praslin Island.

SEZ is currently celebrating 40 years since the first commercial aircraft landed, which also marks the beginning of aviation and tourism development in the Seychelles, and moving forward it plans to develop and grow to become a hub in the Indian Ocean.

Development of Airport Cities moving up the global political agenda

The 2012 Airport Cities World Conference and Exhibition (ACE) is expected to set a new all-time attendance record. This year’s event will take place in Denver from April 25 to 27, hosted by Denver International Airport.

Airport Cities is the world’s premier event which brings together experienced and talented airport professionals, aviation industry experts, and community and business leaders to talk about accomplishments and possibilities, sharing ideas and stimulating discussion.

From its humble beginnings in 2002 at the Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, Florida, where the first ‘Creating Airport Cities’ conference welcomed 120 delegates and a handful of exhibitors, the international event has grown by more than six times in size over the last ten years. This year Denver International Airport (DIA) expects to play host to at least 800 delegates, 50 major corporate sponsors and more than 60 exhibitors at the city’s Sheraton Downtown Hotel – a more than 30% increase compared to the 600 delegates who attended last year’s event.

Alex Kirby, founder and executive vice president of Airport Cities, said: “We are entering a new phase marked by a different level of political involvement in the development of Airport Cities. The development of Airport Cities and Aerotropoli has now evolved from the airport via the city to regional or state governments and will soon ultimately rest with national governments. A few years ago we dealt exclusively with airports as our hosts but this has now changed with cities and regions taking ownership of the event.”

To highlight the phenomenal growth of this unique event, Denver’s new mayor, Michael B. Hancock, said in his recent inauguration speech that his new administration is dedicated to turning the area surrounding DIA into a “bustling aerotropolis that will drive job growth and become a regional economic powerhouse.”

Kim Day, manager of aviation at Denver International Airport, said: “Opportunity – in the form of an aerotropolis – is again available to us, and we intend to explore this potential. So, I can’t think of a better time for Denver to provide the venue for the Airport Cities World Conference.”

The conference begins on Wednesday 25 with an Airport City Tour, followed by a three hour Masterclass run by event chairman Prof. John Kasarda, the industry thought leader and inventor of the term Aerotropolis. That same evening is the Welcome Reception and ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the Exhibition Area.

Thursday sees the start of the two-day conference with the day culminating in the Gala Evening that takes place at ‘Red Rocks’, a natural amphitheatre set in the Rocky Mountains with spectacular views back to the City of Denver. Since opening in 1941 Red Rocks has staged many great concerts including super groups such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and many, many more top artists. Friday will be the second and final day of conference and exhibition activities and will conclude with the Farewell Reception hosted by Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele, the host for ACE 2013 in South Africa.

Notes to Editors

During its 10-year journey around the globe, a number of major international airports and pioneers of the Aerotropolis concept have hosted the Airport Cities conference, including Dubai, Detroit, Rome, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Beijing, Dallas, Memphis and now Denver.

Upcoming events will see South Africa’s Ekurhuleni play host in 2013 followed by Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia a year later, as the conference and exhibition looks forward to ten more equally successful years.

Airport Cities is the sister event to Routes events, the renowned airline, airport and tourism authority networking events focused on air service development.

As the largest Routes Asia event to date draws to a close in Chengdu, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CDIA) have officially handed over to Mumbai, the official host destination of Routes Asia 2013.

Building on the success of this year’s event the largest route development forum for the entire Asia region will take place on 17-19 March 2013 in Mumbai hosted by Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd, GVK managed, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA).

CSIA is a standing participant of the Route Development Forums (World & Asia). With a total of 44 international airlines, and 7 domestic passenger airlines currently operating more than 687 flights a day while directly linking Mumbai to 83 airports in India and worldwide, CSIA offers unmatched connectivity. This coupled with CSIA’s handling efficiency over the last five years and the extremely challenging environment it operates in has made it one of the most important emerging aviation hubs in India and the Asia Pacific Region.

This status will be further enhanced upon the completion of the new state-of-the-art integrated passenger terminal T2 which will coincide with the hosting of Routes Asia 2013 opening later in the same year. The choice of CSIA as a host airport also helps to reinforce its position as India’s foremost airport at the cutting edge of comfort, technology and design.

Speaking at the 10th Routes Asia event which took place in Chengdu 15-17 April 2012, Mr. Rajeev Jain, CEO of Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Limited (MIAL) said: “We are delighted to host the next Routes Asia in Mumbai. Routes is an ideal networking platform for global airline partners for exploring unique business opportunities. CSIA, over the years has emerged as one of the busiest airports in South Asia while recording a stupendous growth in passenger traffic and facilities. We are thus very excited and are gearing ourselves in hosting and welcoming the Routes delegates in Mumbai, the gateway and financial & commercial hub of India. We look forward to showcasing the development of our New Integrated Terminal T2 to all delegates during this event. ”

“After an incredibly successful event here in China it is fantastic that we able to bring Routes Asia to India once again,” explained David Stroud, Executive Vice President Airports, Routes. Stroud continued: “We have worked with the GVK team for many years at our events and are expecting record numbers to attend the event in Mumbai as Routes Asia goes from strength to strength.”

Darwin International Airport was announced as the overall winner of the second heat of this year’s Routes Airport Marketing Awards last night at a spectacular networking evening at the Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu. Over 600 aviation professionals were gathered to witness the presentation of the awards and to take part in the largest Routes Asia event to date.

The Routes Airport Marketing Awards have become synonymous with recognising and rewarding the highest standards of marketing activities undertaken by airports. The awards work on the core principle that the people who are best placed to judge an airport’s marketing activities are the airlines. Airlines from the Asia region have spent the last few months voting for the airports they felt deserved to win and their votes were based on an airport’s marketing activities over the past year.

The winner, Darwin International Airport, demonstrated a clear route development strategy and implementation process in their awards submission and illustrated how they have worked clearly with their airline customers. Darwin has achieved a milestone new route and steady passenger growth to complete a good 12 months work for a regional airport of its size. Winning this regional heat now enables them to be automatically shortlisted for the World Routes Awards due to be held in Abu Dhabi later this year.

David Stroud, Executive Vice President Airports, Routes said: “We are delighted that Darwin has won this regional heat of our awards. It is amazing what they have achieved in just 12 months, particularly after the delivery of Silk Air, and we feel this acknowledgement is fully deserved. Darwin is a first time nominee and it’s great to see them listed here alongside the big players such as Changi and Sydney, this just goes to show that these awards are not about the size of an airport and Darwin will now compete in the World Routes Airport Marketing Awards later this year.”

Speaking just after receiving the award, Jim Parashos, Director Airline and Airport Services for Darwin International Airport enthused: “Wow! What a fantastic recognition of one of the world’s smaller regional gateways. We are absolutely thrilled with this achievement. Darwin Airport has had a clear strategy that has been focussed on delivering increased full-service airlines to Australia’s top end. We are undergoing a A$50 million expansion, a major investment for a facility of our size which handles around 2.3 million passengers per annum, and this will double our busy hour capacity. I would like to thank airports in our region for setting the bar high and making us work hard, our hard working aviation development and marketing team and finally UBM Aviation, Routes for recognising and rewarding Darwin International Airport’s hard work.”

The Routes Airport Marketing Awards were split into 3 sub-regional categories; China & North East Asia, Middle East & India and Oceania & South East Asia. Beijing Capital International Airport was crowned the winner in the China & North East Asia category with GVK – Mumbai International Airport taking the top slot in the Middle East and India Category. A complete list of the nominated airports in each category can be found below:

Oceania & South East Asia

Highly Commended – Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd

GMR Hyderabad International Airport

Bangalore International Airport

The ceremony began with a special achievement award presented to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CDIA) for their contribution to aviation and huge achievements in 2011. Over the past 12 months CDIA have attracted a new air service from Etihad Airways and experienced significant passenger growth taking them to the position of fifth largest airport in China achieving a throughput of 18 million passengers. For these reasons the panel of judges wanted to recognize the achievements of this year’s event host.

16th April 2012, Chengdu, China

The 10th Routes Asia, Asia Pacific region’s only route development forum, is currently taking place in Chengdu, China from 15-17 April, for airlines and airports to meet and shape the future of air service development. Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), the host of The 18th World Route Development Forum in Abu Dhabi, UAE, is one of the key participants in Routes Asia this year.

The ADAC delegation will take part in a number of one-to-one meetings with airlines to discuss potential new routes, and to present the benefits that Abu Dhabi has to offer to the Asian carriers and the Chinese carriers in particular.

Commenting on this participation, Peter Hoslin, Head of Airline Marketing at ADAC, said: “China is an attractive market for Abu Dhabi with the many synergies between the two economies and the extraordinary growth they are both witnessing. Abu Dhabi offers excellent connectivity for China and the rest of Asia for onward travel to Africa, the Middle East and Europe and Routes Asia has been the ideal platform for ADAC’s Airline Marketing Team to connect with the key decision makers within the leading Asian carriers.”

“Hosting World Routes 2012 by ADAC in the UAE Capital will create another golden opportunity for the international airline and airport community to meet on a global scale and to witness, at firsthand, the potential of Abu Dhabi as a key destination to the industry’s decision makers” added Hoslin.

World Routes will be hosted by Abu Dhabi Airports Company and supported by the National Carrier of the UAE, Etihad Airways, as the official carrier for the event and Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority. The event will take place on 29th September to 2nd October and is set to be the largest World Route Development Forum to date with over 2,750 air service industry professionals expected to attend.

Sixteen years ago one of the first World Routes events took place in Abu Dhabi’s downtown Hilton Hotel and the 2012 event marks the first time that World Routes will return to a previous host city. Delegates who attended the 1996 event will be staggered with the vast changes that Abu Dhabi has gone through to become the forward thinking city it is today.

Whilst in China ADAC will extend the invitation to all the airlines and airports attending Routes Asia to register for World Routes and join them in Abu Dhabi later this year.

(Chicago, 11th April 2012) This month’s analysis of the OAG schedules database indicates that airlines worldwide will operate 1% more flights in April 2012, compared to April 2011. The total number of scheduled flights operating in April 2012 is 2,553,480 with an overall seat offering of 328,335,126 an increase of 3% as compared to April 2011. This marks the eleventh consecutive month of growth, according to the latest statistics from OAG, a UBM Aviation brand.

The OAG FACTS (Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics) for April 2012 reveals that whilst the global picture remains encouraging, the trends on a regional basis vary significantly in performance. Capacity development within Europe and North America remains sluggish, compared to the Asia, Middle East and Latin American markets. Indicative of this trend and the economic growth pattern within China, is the continuing race for the number one airport spot which Atlanta looks set to relinquish this year to Beijing after 15 years at the top.

“The Chinese air travel market has the potential to grow 10 times from where it is today, assuming China will reach a similar level of propensity to travel as Europe and the US,” said John Grant, EVP OAG UBM Aviation. “If increased infrastructure demands can be met, the Chinese aviation market has the future potential to grow to over 4 times the size of the US air travel market”.

In-depth report explores the evolution of China’s airports and how the travel demands of a population within a burgeoning economy are met by its aviation industry.

Chicago, 11th April 2012 – OAG, the global leader in aviation intelligence and a UBM Aviation brand, today released the latest in its series of Aviation Market Reports. With Beijing airport poised to claim the number one airport position within the next 12 months, this timely new report explores how the exponential GDP growth within China is reflected in its rapidly expanding aviation market and its ever evolving airports.

As China returns to its historic position as one of the top two global economies, we can see first-hand how a developing aviation infrastructure is enabling the aspirations of an increasingly upwardly-mobile population to be realised. In tandem with this increased passenger demand upon the airlines, is the evolution of China’s airports. With all of the top 20 cities in China having a population of over 3 million (compared to just 2 cities over 3 million in the US), the growth over the last decade within the airports sector looks set to continue if the Chinese people’s insatiable travel demands are to be met.

Beijing dominates the Chinese aviation landscape and although it is set this year to claim the top airport position from Atlanta, the evolution has only just begun. By the end of 2015 the Chinese capital will be the world’s busiest hub. “This is an exciting time in China and the Asia region for the aviation industry,” said Mario Hardy VP Asia, OAG. “The planned airport growth in China over the next ten years, to meet the forecast tenfold increase in demand, is simply staggering. Nowhere is this better represented than the construction of the new mega-airport in Beijing with its nine runways enabling it to handle up to 200 million passengers a year”.
